Oil Sands Truth: Shut Down the Tar Sands

Growth of the Tarpits #2

Growth of the Tarpits #2

Map #2 shows the existing physical footprint of the tarpits on April 23, 2006 in dark red as identified and extracted from the Landsat satellite image. This dark red area does not include the physical footprints of the human settlements (the communities of Fort McMurray and Fort McKay) or logging and forest fires. The largest projects now in production are Syncrude Mildred Lake and Suncor Millenium/Steepbank in the south. Syncrude Aurora North and Shell Albian Sands are also in production on the east side of the Athabasca River further north. On the west side of the Athabasca River, CNRL Horizon is under construction. Shell Jackpine Phase I is also under construction further east of the Athabasca River. Other "Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage" (SAGD) in-situ projects such as Suncor Firebag, Husky Oil Sunrise, Petro-Canada Dover, and TOTAL/Deer Creek In-Situ, surround the "Mineable Oil Sands" area. The physical footprints of the SAGD projects are smaller than the open pit mines as they use surface wells and steam injection to extract the deeper tar (bitumen). The size of the combined (cumulative) physical footprint of the existing tarpits, including roads between the various projects, is about 562.2 square km. This is about the same size as the current built-up (urbanized) area of the City of Calgary, which is estimated at about 523 square km.
