AMMAN (Petra) - During its first meeting of the Parliament’s extraordinary session on Monday, the Senate approved the temporary law ratifying an oil shale concession agreement between the government, represented by the Natural Resources Authority (NRA) and the Jordan Oil Shale Company, as it was referred from the Lower House. The Upper House also approved a draft law ratifying an agreement signed between the NRA and Karak International Oil for oil shale extraction in Lejjun, some 100 kilometres south of the capital. Karak International Oil, a subsidiary of the British firm Jordan Energy and Mining Ltd., previously spent five years exploring the area’s shale reserves. Under the agreement, Karak International Oil is set to use thermal cracking and retorting technology to process oil shale in a 35-square-kilometre concession zone.
